Venice, overwhelmed by tourists or rising tides?

The 2017 has been declared the World Sustainable Tourism Year, representing the greatest opportunity to inform and remind everyone the importance of climate change and its risks, making the ecosystem more vulnerable with sudden natural disasters.

During this 2019, it is important to promote, again, the greatest attention and consideration to the environment. On this purpose, everyone should be more educated and responsible to respect and preserve nature in a more conscious way. These are the fundamental principles of sustainable tourism.

Overtourism, or mass-tourism, can cause serious consequences to any type of environments such as parks, natural reserves, urban spaces, cities etc…

Venice has been recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site with millions of tourists every year, throughout the year. This iconic historical and artistic city risks to be overwhelmed by people more than the rising tide.

These environmental threads must not be underestimated to preserve the uniqueness of this city, thus protecting sustainable tourism in the Veneto Region.

Recently, the City of Venice has finally imposed fines of up to 500 euros on those who leave waste on the streets or in the sea, taking this splendid city as a port dump or a trendy Caribbean beach.

Therefore, ‘Sustainable Venice’ must be promoted as an Italian Heritage against any irresponsible behavoiur towards nature, historical sites and local traditions.
