Seriously…Gioppino!

Does Gioppino’s identity reflect Bergamo’s culture? Apparently, since the very beginning, Zanica’s inhabitants did not want to be compared to this traditional character coming from their rural village.

Actually, Gioppino does not reflect a rude ‘countryside’ personality at all, but loves convivial habits and does not disdain enjoying good food and wine…absolutely ‘Bergamo DOC origin’!

Gioppino, including its Carnival mask, represent authentic Bergamo’s culture and identity, which is not something negative at all, going beyond Carnival festivities.

Bergamo ‘City of hidden treasures’, and ‘Italian Capital of Culture 2023’, promotes tradition and innovation as expression of culture which is not limited to the past but future-oriented, taking place in the squares and streets of the city, in different forms and ways.

Throughout the year, travelling puppet shows became more and more frequent and well-known among people, representing local identity in real, where Gioppino was the undoubtedly protagonist of popular and significant stories.

Nowadays, this valuable tradition continues as a heritage to be preserved: what an ideal way to have fun and, at the same time, get to know more about Bergamo and its cultural identity with Gioppino!

Furthermore, the Bergamo Puppet Museum (Museo del Burattino) gives all the information regarding the world of puppets, marionettes, and, of course, Gioppino!

Everyone enjoys these shows: children, adults and tourists, even from abroad!
