Sustainable development and eco-design in Milan

According to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the action plan of the 17 goals includes ‘Sustainable cities and communities’ as well.

What does this goal mean in specific? Different sustainable strategies support the modernization of poor neighborhoods, safety and efficient services for all.

Furthermore, it supports recovery plans and cultural and natural heritage at national and international level, improving air quality and waste management.

Nowadays Milan aims to respect and improve its sustainability standards, especially in occasion of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

Indeed, thanks to this international sporting event, Milan has demonstrated visitors and residents to be a sustainable, innovative, and accessible tourist destination, promoting the local community.

The Winter Olympics also represents an opportunity to foster positive impacts and sustainable supports to a great extent.

The recent Milan UpTown quarter, for example, is a zero-impact ‘smart district’ located north-west, near the famous Expo area, but also in the South-East as well (South and East UpTown, respectively).

This residential urban regeneration project represents an ideal integration of technology and nature in an urban-industrial context.

Furthermore, it also promotes healthy lifestyle and adequate quality of life, taking into consideration eco-design, environmental and energy issues, LED solutions and the utilization of photovoltaic panels.

The ‘Bosco Verticale’, is an internationally awarded project by renowned italian Architect Stefano Boeri located in Milan Isola area. This building is another example of excellent relationship between architecture and biodiversity, appearing as a ‘large, vertical tree’.

On this purpose, according to the sustainability principles, the surrounding area has been redeveloped with hundreds of trees and thousands of plants, making it greener and more suitable for living in.
